Meet Pamuk, a fluffy white Van cat with one blue eye and one golden eye, a red fez with a swinging tassel and a blue embroidered vest. He sits on his kilim in Cappadocia and plays the kanun, the Turkish zither with dozens of strings, plucking the very string of every note you play. Ibi the hoopoe hops along beside him, her crest fanning up when she sings "hoop-hoop-hoop".
Toddlers Qanun turns your phone or tablet into a real-sounding kanun made for small hands. Every touch makes music, so even the youngest players succeed from the very first tap.
PLAY
Eight smiling hot-air balloons float over the fairy chimneys, each one tied down by a string of the kanun: big balloons for the low notes floating low, little ones for the high notes flying high. Tap a balloon and its string rings while Pamuk plucks the same string, hold it for the kanun's shimmering tremolo, sweep across the balloons for a glissando and shake your finger to bend the note, the way kanun players flip their little mandal levers. Every second note weaves a row of Pamuk's kilim in the colour of that note. When the kilim is finished, it flies! Pamuk and Ibi ride the magic carpet over the balloons. Every note is a real recorded kanun. Record your own tune and play it back, and try more sounds: santur, magic kanun, harp, ney, music box and kalimba.
REAL KANUN
The whole instrument lies in front of your child, just as it lies on a player's knees: twelve courses of three strings, the bridge on its skins and a row of mandals. Pluck, hold for a tremolo, sweep for a glissando and flip a mandal to make a note a little lower. A chart shows the scale, and Pamuk can play a little taksim in makam hicaz, flipping the mandals as he goes.
SONGS
26 songs, from Üsküdar'a Gider İken, Damat Halayı and Rondo alla Turca to Twinkle Twinkle, Ode to Joy and Pamuk's own songs, each with its own band: fasıl, halay, çiftetelli, a mehter march, waltzes, a Bosphorus barcarolle and gentle lullabies.
• Magic mode: any balloon plays the next note, so your child sounds like a star at once.
• Follow mode: the right balloon glows, so little musicians learn the melody.
• Listen mode: Pamuk and the band play the whole song.
BAND
Play with the bazaar band under the mosaic lamps: darbuka, clarinet, violin, oud and def. Pick one of ten grooves and every balloon fits. Tap the big SWOOSH! button and Pamuk sweeps every string over the band, and add ten kanun tricks with one tap, from a tremolo and a taksim to a hoopoe, a seagull and a big finish.
GAMES
In The Tulip Garden the tulips are still sleeping: play the morning song and every line opens a row of tulips at sunrise. In Ebru Painting every note drops its colour on the water of a marbling tray: swirl the colours with your finger and lift the paper to keep your picture. Repeat Ibi's tunes in Copy Ibi, and tell high from low with the seagull and the Bosphorus ferry in High or Low?
LULLABIES
Pamuk dozes over his kanun in moonlit Cappadocia while hot-air balloons float past the moon, counted one by one, and the magic kanun plays lullabies with harp and a music box. A sleep timer slowly fades the music out.
